Developers Choose Redi-Rock to Make Space for Ski Homes

THE CHALLENGE

Intrawest ULC, owner of numerous ski, beach, and golf resorts around the world, developed a plan to add high-end exclusive homes on the mountain slope at Stratton Resort in Vermont. The project plans included 15 lots that would be sold for approximately $1 million each. In order to construct the lots, Intrawest needed to develop a significant section of the lower mountain, and to gain access, they needed to build the infrastructure to support it.

THE SOLUTION

Intrawest selected a Redi-Rock gravity wall to provide the structural support required for this project due to the proven engineering and aesthetic of the blocks. The project was engineered by Stantec Engineering and Eric Merluzzi of Souhegan Valley Engineering of Unity, New Hampshire did the wall design. Redi-Rock Walls of New England began delivering blocks at the beginning of May 2007; they shipped approximately 5,000 Redi-Rock Cobblestone blocks to the project over the next six months.

THE OUTCOME

The project consisted of 18 Redi-Rock retaining walls including two drive-through/ski-over tunnels. Each tunnel consisted of four wing walls up to 30 feet (9.1 meters) in height. The precast tunnel face was finished with a custom arch veneer designed to accent the Redi-Rock walls. This project also included a 5-acre (2 hectare) retention pond with a 200 foot (61 meter) long by 20 feet (6.1 meter) high Redi-Rock wall. Redi Rock Walls of New England installed each of the tunnel walls as well as the custom arch veneer. Scott's Construction Inc. completed the remainder of the walls.
